throughout my life, I've grown to prefer Fantasy/Adventure/Humor/Dark/Psychological stories over any other kind of story. I don't mind a bit of violence/gore, nor do I mind a bit of romance or other mature content, but I absolutely despise stories with Romance being the main focus. as for oneshots and short stories, I prefer Humor as well as Mystery and Dark stories. and I recently grew to like the 'sob stories', that is, the really sad fics.

I agree that romance is ok, but shouldn't be the focus.

Romance in the focus has been done FAR too often.

Though, how would you feel for romance being a character's motivation vs a focus?

hm. I have different opinions on that. it completely depends on the story. I do think there has to be another motivation except for romance (HTTYD did great on that point), but I don't mind it being one of the reasons a character does something. for minor characters, I don't really mind romance being their only motivation.

there's one thing I REALLY can't stand; people putting an OC in a story while it's not absolutely necessary. I'm following a REALLY good YuGiOh fanfic, and if one OC hadn't been there or had played a different role, it'd be perfect.

I think as long as the story influential and inspiring, I don't really have a preference of genre :D I love classical books for this reason in particular as most of the books leave a huge impression on me once I finish reading. Dickens is one of my favourite authors as he writes stories in the perspective of a working class labourer turned author and challenges the Victorian lifestyle and morality; Oliver Twist and Great Expectations were some of my favourite books ; u ;

I really like stories that can mix a little bit of everything - not at one whole story, but you know like a certain part can be a little disturbing and such. (But of course not everything. xD Unless if you can really pull that off!)

I'm okay with romance, but I'm not a big fan of it since I always see it everywhere. If it's like some side thing that doesn't get in the way of the story or doesn't become the "main problem", then I'm fine.

I mean, if the story revolves around a certain atmosphere/environment, it's fine. :) It's more interesting if it's more diverse then just "one type", if you can understand what I'm saying.

I get so miffed by stories of constant action, like nobody ever needs a break or rest. It's unrealistically pushed as gogogogogo and never stopping. u_u

Romance needs a purpose for me, not just to be there for illegit reasons.

I agree that more diverse stories tend to be more interesting. It fills a need to be more involved... like using all the senses, not just one.

Yeah, I agree with that too. It's all about explosions and blowing stuff up and pieces of metal flying everywhere.

I like it when a romance is connected to something in the story, but when it's just drama dumped in there, it makes me wonder why.

I really love it when there are even fanfic writers that write so that you feel what the character feels, not just what's going on. One story I read kind of teared up me to be honest. ;-;

It's a thin line, but the outcome can be magnificent.
Three movies that come to mind are One Flew Over the Cuckoo Nest, Heathers, or a less slapstick Beetlejuice.
The Addam's Family has got it down, too.

Go to the teeny popper section at barns and noble and you'll find them Stitch clap plz

Love triangles... gahhhh my little sister reads them all the time and it drives me crazy
its the same plot just with different themes... Angles, fairy's, witches, Vampires, werewolf's.... :P etc.
The characters are typical stereotypes and nothings that original, its just recycled junk that's been turned into another story.
Twilight is a huge representation of that and its probably the one main one that started this crappy trend of authors.

Haha The typical wolves, fae, vamps and all that over used supernatural stuff. I agree. e___e That's why I'm mixing it up by using animals not normally seen in stuff...

Well, some stereotypes are everywhere, and in the most common films and books, but they were done in such a way that it was made to be a bit unique compared to everyone else' versions. OR the character was made a bit more relatable.

Twilight did start it, but there were always books like it before our time I guess.

Which is awesome  I love your stuff.

True,
But the typical stereotypes I'm talking about
are usually the ones in love triangles. The girl usually sees
herself as lower standard, average, etc. While the two guys
are smoking hot, mysterious and out of the girls league but
somehow they both fall for her and she has to pick between
the two. :P

So boring and repetitive... and maybe but I didn't see the trend
start up until after twilight.. then it was just everywhere lol Emote - Kitty glomp

I like mixed because I think it's more interesting.  For example, Harry Potter is one of my favorite book series ever; it has romance, action, humor, and a couple of dark aspects.

I like balance. Then there isn't too much of any one thing, and depending on what you're into, there's something to interest you in it... and the variety means you get to exercise/interest more than one part of your brain... it's hard for me to describe properly, but basically it causes me to have a variety of emotions, feelings and interests all be experienced in one package.

Nah I understand. A lot of my favorite stories have a mix of genres, though have one main one they are classified as. Every little part has its time or two to shine. Really good stories give a huge range of emotions in smaller doses and sometimes larger ones to keep everything relateable. Yhus more interesting. :D

My favorite stories tend to be the ones with really interesting characters, interactions between the characters, and character development. I'm not very good at following plots, but I love seeing how the interactions between the characters build upon ideas or themes. I also love mysteries and some adventure.

Just saying Naor does get a bit... tangled, though I focus on my characters and their development very much so.

Usually I just reread the series once I have the hang of who's who, so I can be more familiar with it. (If I like it enough to reread it.) I tend to be okay with what's going on right at that moment, but I often forget what happened BEFORE where I am in a given series. So I understand what I'm reading, but I wouldn't be able to recount the plot of the series to another person.

Ah, rereading can be pretty helping indeed. :D I love to reread things later simply to see if I missed anything the first time or two.
