Does it bother you when people store deviations that are old? (Yes I do this, I often store things that are older than 2 years, but sometimes I leave them unstored if they are popular.)

I understand storing old, inferior work, so long as it's not something someone paid/traded for. But a friend of mine stored some character designs I wanted to access today, and now I can't get a hold of them.

It really depends. I often put some old literature works of mine in storage, because they're really personal to me and sometimes seeing stuff like that brings up a lot of memories I'd rather not tread through. I try to keep them up if they were favorited a lot or commented on, however. It does annoy me going through my favorites and finding a bunch of stuff in storage, and I wish that the artists would have simply made an "Old" folder on their page to put old stuff in. On the other hand though, I have to be understanding since I am often guilty of the same thing. I guess the difference to me is the line between making an "Old" folder on your page, and storing things for a more personal reasoning such as my own. Besides, most people actually LIKE seeing how an artist has improved drastically over time and "old" folders can be fun to look through! On a side note, there is the new stash feature DA created so it isn't necessary for artists to store deviations as a digital backup any longer.

Mhm, some of the artwork I've stored is that it simply is too personal now.

True, while there is the stash, I use a lot of it for going back a forth between school and back, so I don't have to worry about losing a flashdrive or something. I'm always losing them. ;-; My stash is getting full alreayd sadly, though I try to keep it clean and organized. It doesn't take long for me to fill up 10GB.

I wish artists would just leave the old work up! Some of my favorite pieces of art on this site are in "storage"

I try to keep my dA looking fresh and new because I use it professionally as well. I don't want professionals seeing old work, and using THAT as a first impression on my current art or skill level because they aren't aware of seeing the time stamp when you click on it.

I certainly understand the reasoning, however there was a piece of art on DA that insired me to keep going that has now been deleted or is in storage. I have no idea who did it and so can not ask them to re-post or remove from storage. Because of this I kinda dislike the "stored deviations" thing. I do agree however it is a useful tool, but i can not be made to like it.

I highly dislike it. it leaves ugly blank space in my favs. an artist put the wallpaper I have on my desktop in storage, and as a result, I can't save it.

It's the artist's decision, and I can respect that, but... yes, I dislike it. I hate having that big, ugly storage icon in my favourites (which is more DA's fault than the artist's). In fact, I routinely go through my favourites and remove the stored items just for that reason. It also reminds me that I am missing out on seeing artwork that I thought was beautiful or interesting enough to go into my favourites (especially if it was artwork made for me). I much rather wish that they would just move the artwork over to their scraps if they want to clean out their gallery a bit. But I definitely see the need to store rather than delete. Deletion, I feel, is the worst option, as the artist is losing is a digital back-up. Plus, it's more difficult to prove when you created an art piece without an online date stamp.

I wouldn't say "just delete it", but it is really frustrating for me to see a bunch of stored deviations in a gallery. I look at older stuff knowing it's going to be older and not as good - if I didn't have that understanding, that would just be me being stupid. I still want to see it. I like seeing how things have changed.
It also annoys me as the admin of a few groups to have to keep rooting through thousands of deviations to find and remove stored ones.

I hate it. It's a lack of respect of all of those who put the art in their favorites and for the groups where it was submitted. If only dA would automatically remove the stored art from the gallery but no, it's still appears and messed up the galleries. It's extra work for the admins who manage the gallery and need to manually remove all the stored deviations.

Seriously, it would be better to remove the deviation since it would not stay forever as an ugly picture in the galleries. Storage should be for temporary measures.

Deleting old artwork seems too extreme for me though. As a professional (trying to be), I do not want perspective employers to locate my dA account since it does use my working name, see thumbnails and auto assume it is recent, and if low quality. Yes you can either through it into scraps, or simply hide it from thefolders by removing it, but what if you might want it back online for some reason in the future?

i try to remove artwork from groups before storing it, but I still miss a few. I am human, but I also use storage as a back up service.I am sad to say I easily have over 500 deviations in storage, mostly because they are 5-6 years old.

I stopped displaying my favorites on the front pages because sometimes, it would mostly show deviations in storage. dA should really hide them. :|

Storage is a sort of place where you can put your deviations after you submit them if you don't want them in the public galleries again. Most people don't like them because they leave a "ugly thumbnail" that looks like a safe. You can go there by hovering over the "submit" button at the top menu, then select "Manage deviations" on the menu that pops up.

I don't have much opinion on storing vs. deleting, but to me it's a bummer to hide old art at all!  I really, really enjoy looking through old art for both a nostalgia factor and as inspiration! It's always so wonderful to see how much someone's improved over the years.  It's always a big inspiration for me!  Though I do understand wanting to hide old work.

For me, it is more from a professional standpoint. I want my pages looking new and fresh with my best and newest work. Also, I don't want them to see a thumbnail of older work, and judge it thinking it is newer work. Storing allows me personally to get inspired by my old artwork.

I looooove also to see old artwork from others, which is why I leave some unstored, because I know it maybe be popular with those who watch or follow me.

That makes sense!  I do art strictly for the fun of it, so I don't really mind who sees what when.  I can only hope that if they see something *really* old, that they see the ancient time stamp and look for more recent stuff ahaha.

I do miss old things I love though.  And having that YOU CAN'T SEE IT!!!!! Thumbnail is almost like having DA taunt me! I wish they would just remove stored stuff and not leave in that eyesore of a thumbnail <__<

well, it's up to the person to remove the thumbnail, so that is their laziness or just they missed one.

If there's a good reason for storing it, I really have no issue with it.  Though I can think of very few reasons to do so.

Personally in my opinion. why don't you delete it. Why go through the effort to store it and have an ugly storage thumbnail on the deviations place.

Most of the time I really don't mind.  I understand the need to take something out of the public purview, whether it's being revamped or simply old work that doesn't represent a person's art anymore.  The only time it annoys me is if it was a quality piece and I look through my fave folders and find a piece missing - doubly so if it was a ref I was saving and didn't download when it was available.

It kind of irritates me when people store commissions or trades, or pretty much stuff for other people without telling the person it was for. I feel like you should at least notify someone. :T

Like, if you let them know, and/or they have a link to it in your sta.sh or something then it's alright, but with no warning it's pretty annoying. :T
I have friend who just lost a bunch of commissions to people storing them without warning.

I know that, as an artist, if I had done something that upset someone, especially someone who ordered a commission from me, I would WANT to know that I was bothering them by accidently forgetting to let them know! I'd feel bad about it and want to make sure they have their commission/s since they'd be stored.

:p The worst that could happen is they'd get grumpy and complain, and if that happens, then that artist isn't worth anyone's commission money. If they aren't willing o make sure their client could get a copy of their commission AFTER it was stored, then that's just proving how mean and rude they are. She should at least try.

Yeah, I told her the same, but it's in her hands now.
I always save commissions for me so I personally don't have that issue, but it's still irritating to go to link to it or something and find it in storage. :T
