So I have been journal happy lately. Sorry not sorry. Late night thoughts I guess.

Sketching is the single most important part in any visual fine art sort of medium. Why? Sketching allows for Roughs and mistakes, ideas and thoughts to flow freely without any worry of perfection. Lately I hear from many people how they are afraid to sketch or they don't. They find it boring.

While I can agree when it comes to drawing things I don't like, stuff like sketching is like stretches for athletes. Loosens up your arms and hands and back and mind.

Arms and back? Wut? Well when you use just your hand, the pencil can only move as your hand does. It you use your arm elbow down + hand... now you have more motion! Imagine if you use your entire arm and shoulder! Lots more possible motion, more energy and life will be there as long as it iscontained.

The doodles I added are examples of something I likely would never post, not even in a sketchdump. On, Instagram, yeah, but not here.

Why? Because not every you or I draw needs to be posted. Since I started getting active in dA years ago I posted EVERYTHING I did as its own deviation. Then I learned what a sketchdump was. I'm up to 62 now (making it)... 62 sketchdump in what, 3-4 years?

I only post half of what I do, if that. My point is that draw for YOU. Sketch for YOU. I'm sadly embarrassed to add those doodles to my journal. Those headfirst things I drew today. I wasn't ready for the day. Also notice that they are in pen. Why? In the time I have studied, I feel a lot of emotional growth can cone from sketching in ink and pen mediums.

This means you cannot fix them. In mine, some of those winds are wonky. Do I care? Nope. I know mistakes happen and I need to study wings more. So I will XD I don't care that I messed up Tuhk, that I feel I drew him terribly. It is A SKETCH, it is ok, I will survive.

Oh and don't toss them in trash! Archive them. I do that, I have a special folder under my desk for this stuff.

So don't be afraid of sketching. Keep drawing and you will get there. As always, give me any questions you have.

I really didn't get this until I started school. Like, I'd draw constantly but it was the same few things and I only thought it was of value if I ended up at a decent and fully-rendered state. Now I'm drawing everything I can whenever I can in whatever medium and my art has improved by leaps and bounds. Yeah, some of it is crappy and I feel terrible sometimes when someone pokes around in my sketchbook and sees the lesser bits, but I know I should be proud of the hours I'm putting in to improve myself.

It really does matter and it really just shows. I pulled out a portrait I did last semester and compared it to one from this semester and that little change means a whole lot. My drawing professor this semester is kind of the most awesome inspiration I've ever been faced with honestly. He's changed how I feel about sketching so much in a short time.

This is great. I am only getting more into sketching now but in doing so, I can see my weaknesses more clearly. Now I wish I began doing it more actively all along. Regretssss

It's never too late bro. Don't focus on regretting it, just spend all the time you can doing it for the right reasons.

literally 90% of what I do is sketches and usually the ones I really like I'll clean up a bit and slap some color on
and I've learned not all my sketches necessarily need to be in my sketchbook, what I'll do is I'll just open up a doc in photoshop and keep on adding layer after layer of sketches. Admittedly that means I end up with a shit ton of layers and its turning out to be a bit of a bad habit but it keeps me sketching and comfortable drawing no matter what medium I'm using

Wow! Nice sketch! I love watching the sketches of others! ^^

I sketching everyday, it's good exercise for my hand, and a way to save the ideas that fall into my head. :)

It's page from my little daily sketchbook. :)

To be honest I didn't used to sketch. I didn't need to. Me and my friend were the only people that saw the art. I wasn't worried about how it looked, just what it conveyed.

Then I began sketching after she bugged me about it. Not only did it help improve my art, but it also made me able to draw things like humans, and doodle little things to help me think about my art style

//The picture is upside down

I love sketching, although I don't do it nearly as often as I should (in my sketchbook, anyway) <3

I completely agree with you: sketching is a great way to practice all sorts of skills, not to mention that it's fun and allows you to experiment with ideas too. Nice sketches, by the way!
