College + Naor UPDATE

Fri Aug 22, 2014, 5:25 PM
So many of you are now, hopefully, aware that I have returned to college. This was my first week, and now I am home. I actually was let out a little early, and I'm exhausted, so I'll likely do some light drawing and sketchbook stuff tonight before I sleep. But here is how it went down.

Monday = Perspective, Mentorship, History = 13 hours on campus

Perspective was insane. It's gonna be a lot of work, but it is very much a liberal homework sort of class. Like it is, include ellipses or arches or this many shape or this many shape. It's really not hard at all! Just very time consuming. My senior status has already been found out, however I did not get the mocking reaction I thought I would. I think actually, as far as interaction goes, this class has been the best ever in my 3 years. I am treated as an equal, but still asked for advice and lots of questions about teachers and future classes. General things about Ringling and their future as students. Many were quite happy to hear there was a senior! Despite its heave work load, I look forward to it now, plus it's like 90% enviros. Hehehehehehe

Mentorship works like this. It is not a legit "class". I get no credit for it, however I CAN put it on my resume. So It works out, plus even then the teaching would be invaluable. I have an open period during Barker's sophomore class, so I "sit in on it" and when he's done with his current students, I can get a chance to talk to him too. This saves both of us from having to stay late, since he lives about an hour away. I feel with Barker I have more then just a teacher relationship, because we are able to harass and make fun of each other in front of others and it's ok. It feels different this year I guess. He has asked me to do an inking demo when they do their inking project and it just made me lightheaded to think Barker feels I'm worthy of doing a demo to teach his students some things about ink. He likes the stuff I do have for Naor so far.

History will be an easy A. No exams, no tests, just lectures and 2 projects. Easy A, and sooooo glad I chose this class. PLUS the teacher is an amazing guy and super awesome and full of SUPER great traveling advice. He's gonna help put me in touch with the Danish embassy to see about getting some scholarship with the Danes in Greenland. This is another option instead of the JET program I am considering. -dies of happiness-

Tuesday = Anthropology class (mostly cultural) and Illustration (Thesis class) = 8 hour day

Anthropology sounds amazingly fascinating to me, at least the cultural and linguistic side to things. I already know I will love this class, plus the workload is very very light. No exams, or big projects. Just little ones and one or two 5-10 minute presentations. I get to do mine on the Anasazi! :D

Illustration was the lass I was most nervous for. I was so afraid this was going to be the most difficult class, but it is turning out great. The first day was mostly introduction and we were given assignment to prepare an assignment idea and pitch it too him.

Wednesday = Graphic Novel = 8 hour day

Awesome class, hands down. It will be a LOT of work, 30 pages of only observation drawings a week for one. I mean, it's totally possible, just.. a lot to do. 4-5 pages a day takes a bit, and having to make them decent pages with decent drawings. XD I plan on going to the Aquarium tomorrow so that I can get a large amount done. I also have 8 pages to do by Wednesday, just roughs. I also was mentioned to about an assistant position from the teacher to help with archiving and scanning original pages of art and comics. -dies- YES PLEASE. I do plan to sign up for it, though it'll make me busier... it'll be valuable I hope. eue PLUS, more resume and networking opportunities, woo! It's unpaid, but I dont' care. I will get paid in experience and learning about comics.

Thursday = Perspective and Mentorship = 8 hour day

Turned in my first homework assignment (2 still life drawings I forgot to scan) and did a roughly 2.5 hour exercise. Teacher set up a still life on a cart with wheels. He then told us to pick a spot and we would be drawing this still life. The catch was, we would do 8 drawings of it. For each drawing the time got shorter and the angle changed, since he rotated the cart each time. I had fun with it and I plan to scan it and show all this stuff to you guys. XD I had to turn it in right away and I couldn't get a scan of it. I'll get one when I get it and my first homework back. Here are the intervals of the 8 drawings though! Imagine having this amount of time to draw shapes, like rectangles, cubes, cones and even a hexagon prism!
1- 40 minutes
2- 20 minutes
3- 10 minutes
4- 5 minutes
5- 3 minutes
6- 2 minutes
7- 1 minute
8- 30 seconds

Mentorship = A longer day, I got to watch Barker demo in pencil. I was so crushed at the end because he asked for a female hero to draw and I suggested Hawkgirl and I was so happy, then he's like "I forget her costume, give me another" and I though of female Thor and he liked that one. When he was almost done, he's like "Nope I hate it" and tore it up in front of everyone and I nearly cried. Having my two favorite heros (even a female version on the same piece of paper drawn by Barker... and he just tore it up. Such sad face. There was s super thunderstorm coming so we left early and didn't get a chance to talk about Naor. I need all the spreads concepted and ready by Monday though. Most are anyway.

Friday: Illustration = 4 hour day --- NAOR UPDATE, READ AT LEAST THIS ONE.

Illustration was both a nervous wreck for me today and super fabulousness icing on top of a cake of epic. I had both my 4 page versions of both my portfolios. Overall the feedback was I am adding too much black to my artwork and it's too detailed. If I shrink it to actual final size, it'd look choppy and overdone. We tried it and I agree, it looked horrid. He said for personal and large illustrations, go for it, but for comic stuff, tone it down and allow for more white space to tell the story. I am really very relieved to hear this. In addition, the pitch for the idea I gave him was the first 8 pages for the Prologue and it was approved. So I get to do comic work FOR homework instead of in addition to it. I cannot tell you how excited it makes me! The idols I am using for example, Frank Frazetta, Mike Mignola, Joe Kubert and Hogarth are all people my teacher is familiar with, so he knows the look and feel I do want. I'm very excited to work, and I'll be busy over the next 2 weeks. Hopefully, I can convince him to let me do the other 8 pages for the assignment after that, but I need to do a good job on these first! :la:

Thanks for reading, if you read it all. I'm going to go sleep. It's been a LOOOOOONG week, and it's only the first one. I got very little sleep.

oh btw, funny story. I heard from a freshman: "OMG I only got like 7 hours of sleep last night, I'm so tired. Do these guys really expect us to stay up late for them? I mean don't people our age need a certain amount of sleep EVERY NIGHT?"

WOW. :D
I cannot express how happy I am for you!!
Sounds cheesy, but it looks like you are having a wonderful adventure at college.
I am glad it is no longer so negative for you and you are excited about everything you are doing.
The demo thing is such an honor. I am glad you aren't hearing mockery about your skills.
All the hard work is going to pay off.
Just don't run yourself down with too much responsibility. lol.

This school sounds so awesome =D I'm jealous
I know how art school can be very time consuming but sleep is important, you don't want to 'burn out' after a couple of weeks, I know I did in my first year of college

While I know sleep is important,so is homework. I would rather lose 4-5 hours and make my homework better. It will work out in the long run. Plus, learning to nap is a great skill, sleeping in one solid chunk is not really an option always, so getting sleep when you have the chance I find works too if it comes to that. But I refuse to sacrifice quality of my assignment for sleep. That reflects on work ethic.

I totally understand, it's hard being a perfectionist :p people don't always get why you want to work until 3 am on a project, because you want to give it your very best.
Most are happy as long as they pass a subject but they're the ones that don't succeed later on in their carreer.

For me, as an art student, my art represents me. If I toss out unfinished work to my teachers I lose reputation and grades.

In addition,I work slower than my peers, something I am working on. It might be that I demand perfection, idk. But I would rather turn in something I am proud of and not sleep for three days than turn a project half finished but fully rested. I stay up days at a time not because I want to, I have to. I would love to sleep, but sometimes I just do not get the chance.

"Omg I got 7 hours of sleep" O_o I already sleep daily like 5-7 hours during school (about 3-5 hours if there's a test/too much homework) and I'm only in high school... ;-;
