Willow Waters WIP 2 by Ahkward Willow Waters WIP 2 by Ahkward
Starting the Inking process! I had become shy about sharing WIPs, but I want to start posting them again since people keep asking me about my process. ouo When I do my pencils they are quite rough, however I did a bunch of thumbnails and practice versions too, so I can feel confident when I ink. :'D

I'm really looking forward to this because of all the water and the over-underwater shot this has. I've never done one before and it looks so fun! :'D

This is a commission for BC-Rain. ouo First WIP below!

Interesting. Most people would say that they don't like the envirionments because they are the hardest part. Or at least I would.

That's because most people can't draw them. I find them easier than characters personally.

Even more interesting. I'd say the most difficult part are not the envirionments or characters themselves, but rather putting a character into an envirionment, making that believable. For some reason I've always had problems with this.

That's because people try to draw an environment like they draw any object/thing. An environment is not just a background, it's a middle ground and foreground, atmosphere, temperature, weather, etc. Environments AFFECT anything in them, even if it's just color or lighting. People who don't understand how basic lighting and 3D space works aren't going to understand how to place a character into an environment. In addition, if you don't understand perspective, but linear and atmospheric, you might have a character or object that looks like one perspective, but the environment will be another. That can also cause it to look off.

Yay! They feel so organic right? You can almost smell the paint and hear the tip of the pen caressing the paper.

When it comes to sketches, I see them as a language. If I give my sketch to anyone but me, they will likely be confused by it. Some people have clear neat sketches that anyone can understand and those take more effort, like any person who talks multiple languages makes more effort. It is between our mind and our hand and our muse.

The muse says here is an idea and talks to our mind: a line here a line there. Maybe a curved one here.

Then our mind has to translate that for our hands to make it. I think times people say "it looked better in my head" simply had a bad translation or cannot understand their muse. That is why sketching is important, it helps train you and your muse to speak together in your own language. That takes time, but that is one reason I think sketching often is so important to practice.
