Kookaburra by Ahkward Kookaburra by Ahkward
More homework sketches, this one is a kookaburra. If you haven't ever heard one of these birds, you should google them. They have a  very interesting "laughing" sound they make.

omg i've never seen one of these before, however as a kid in elementary school we would sing a song about it in choir which was fun, and was one of the things i feel like didn't actually sound too bad when we sang it. I'm actually surprised no one else wrote about it, but maybe its not a thing everyone does? i dunno this kind of just sprung a childhood memory so thanks for that! ^^ awesome drawing btw!

Heheh, I was going to say something about my interesting experiences with their food-stealing and general hysteria. But this sketch really brought the aussies out into the comments! You've probably got a pretty good picture of how crazy they are now.
This is a beautiful sketch, the line work gives the whole thing so much movement. It looks just like what they look in life. <3 Awesome work~

It's weird to me to think there's people in the world who don't hear these birds every single day. I live in Australia and there's many kookaburras living near my house. Every morning they laugh, way nicer sounding than roosters. :P

I had a friend from Washington state stay with me for three months, and she was super confused when she first heard them, thinking we had monkeys here. My husband is from Texas and he still thinks they're ridiculous. :P

Also I wanted to let you know I totally had a small fangirl-moment there. "Oh my gosh Ahward responded to my comment! *squee*" kind of thing.

lol I try to treat everyone equally as far as replying to comments! :D I love talking with my watchers and supporters, even "fans". I think all fans are supporters since without them I'm just an average person who draws. rofl

I volunteered at a zoo up in Ohio for a few years and I always loved hearing our kookaburra in the mornings. Then again I didn't live with them 24/7. XD They are rather weird if you have to hear them often I guess. I can't imagine that.

Oh working at a zoo sounds awesome. I volunteer for a group called Wildlife Rescue Inc and get to see some Australian native life.

In the Aboriginal Dreaming tales, the kookaburras are responsible for waking up the sun, which is why they laugh every morning. :)

They are pretty cool to hear. When we went to the jungle gardens he did that laughing call. I'd heard it many times before so it wasn't surprising to me, but it's still cool to hear.

I'm not sure I've ever heard them in real life o: I'm a bit sad I didn't know of Save Our Seabirds until my senior year because I would've went there several times for sure. At least we got to see Jungle Gardens many times :3
